WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
I send home a paper newsletter each week (usually on Mondays) as well as sending the newsletters by e-mail. If you are not receiving this newsletter by e-mail, please let me know so that I can add you to my list.

HOMEWORK PACKAGES
This week I am sending home our first homework package. For those who have not been in my class before, the children receive a homework package attached to that week’s newsletter each Monday. The homework is due on Friday of that week. You and your child can decide when to do the homework, depending on your family’s schedule. Some children like to do it all at once and some like to do a little each night. If you are busy one evening, you can skip a night. We are working on time management and responsibility. They need to return the entire homework package each Friday with the coloured newsletter still attached. (This helps me to keep track of the homework.) There is a space at the bottom of each newsletter for the parents to initial (yes - you have flipped through the homework and it is complete – you do not need to correct it at home). Please initial the package every week – so I know that you received and read the newsletter. There is also a space to write a brief note if you would like to ask a question or add a comment. We are starting off with just spelling homework for this week. I may switch children into different groups after a few weeks – so let me know how it is going (too easy, too difficult?) I will be adding other homework pages later on. Spelling tests are on Friday.

WELCOME BACK

I am sending home the first welcome letter with your child today, unless I gave it to you personally at the home visit. I am also sending home the plan for our BIG themes this year. I have combined all of the grade two and three, science and social studies curriculum outcomes under six main themes – our first theme is called “LIFE UNDERGROUND”.

FOOD NOTES

The canteen will be open next week, so do not plan on having your child buy food items this week. You may purchase a canteen card for your child for $10 from the office. Remember you can always restrict what you want your child to be able to purchase (example - milk only). This year the violin classes are before and after first recess so our class will be dividing up snack time – one group before recess and one group after recess.

SUMMER MEMORIES BAG

Your child will be bringing home a paper bag today. This is our “summer memories” bag. Over the weekend, please help you child find a few items from their summer holidays, to put in their bag. Each child will be sharing their memories with the class. (example – this seashell reminds me of visiting Vancouver and collecting shells on the beach. This photo reminds me of my grandma, etc …) Three or four items will be fine. Please bring the bag back to school next week. Thanks.

GOOD-BYE
It’s hard to believe that this is the last week of school. The children have grown so much this year – academically, emotionally, socially and spiritually as well as PHYSICALLY! We’ve learned so much together – especially me. I wanted to thank you parents for your help and support this year and I wish you a wonderful, restful, and blessed summer.

LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL SCHEDULE
Monday – Kindergarten grad 9:00 am (All of the older students attend to cheer!)- Sports Day in the afternoon (Fun games in the sun!)
Tuesday – Clean-up day (I’m away in the afternoon for my daughter’s grad)
Wednesday – Grade 8 Grad - at 1:00 pm (Each class has a short presentation)
Thursday – Last Day of School – Award Certificates at 1:00 pm - - Class Party at 2:15 pm

CLASS PARTY
We have time for a final ``Party`` on Thursday at the end of the day. The only families that are assigned to bring snacks are –
Zoe – food and Mrs. Petkau – drinks If anyone else would like to send a snack along to school for our party, that would be very much appreciated.

LOST and FOUND
Don`t forget to check out the lost and found items at school before the end of the school year. Any leftover clothing items will be donated to charity.

ROBOT DELAY

We were so busy last week with the extra violin events and Father’s Day projects that we didn’t get around to starting our robots. So this week we are going full-steam ahead. If you still had some extra appliances or recycle-able stuff, there is still time to send it on Monday (today).

OAK HAMMOCK MARSH

Our field trip to Oak Hammock is on Thursday, June 23. We will be leaving the school as soon as we get organized (around 9:00). It takes about 45 minutes to get there. Our first activity is a “Marsh Walk-About” and this starts at 10:00. Our second activity is “Amphibians and Reptiles” which starts about 11:00. Next, we have time for lunch. (12:00 to12:30) Our last activity is “Critter Dipping” and this begins at 12:45. We leave around 1:45 and drive back to school. We should arrive back before 3:00 or so for dismissal.
Notes for Field Trip –
- Wear weather appropriate clothing (dress in layers)
- Wear good walking shoes and socks (not flip flops or sandals)
- Wear a sun hat
- Put on sun lotion and bug spray before coming to school
- Send a lunch (nothing that needs microwaving) and 2 drinks
- Send an easy snack that the children can eat in the cars on the ride out
- Do not send money (the children will not be allowed to buy anything)
- We still go on the trip even if it rains (just wear rain boots and a rain coat)
- Anything that they bring along, they have to carry themselves.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

TAKE A LOOK FOR BOOKS
Library Books - I sent home a purple reminder note with the names of library books that your child still has checked out. Please take a look around your house for them. If you have already sent them back to school, please just write a note on the purple paper with this information. Sometimes the books get returned and we just don’t see them or don’t mark them off of our list.
Classroom Books – I would also like all of the classroom books returned by the end of this week. These are my personal books and they have a white sticker on the front (hopefully) with my name on them. Thanks!

BUILDING ROBOTS
Finally, we have reached the end of our Objects and Materials Science Unit and it is time to build our robots. Please send any small appliances that you have saved up for us to school. We could use any recyclable materials for our robots as well (cereal boxes, toilet tubes, plastic containers, interesting bits and pieces...) We could use almost anything – but don’t send anything that you want back. I’d like to start building on Wednesday, so if possible send the “stuff” to school in the next few days.

SUMMER WEATHER
Even though it is sandal weather outside, the children still need runners for gym class. They can wear sandals in or out but they do need to change shoes from inside to outside. If you want your child to put on sun lotion, they can leave a labelled bottle in their locker and put it on themselves before recess. Lastly, I would recommend sending a sun hat to school for your child. We spend a lot of time outside during these last few hot weeks of school.

FIELD TRIP TO OAK HAMMOCK
We will be going on a field trip to the Oak Hammock Marsh on Thursday, June 23. This will be an all day trip and we will need parent drivers and chaperones. The children will need to bring a bag lunch (nothing that needs to be heated). I will send home more information regarding this field trip later on. The permission slip is coming home today. Please fill out the form and return it to school by Friday, June 10.

LIBRARY BOOKS
We are winding up our library time for the year. Please take a look around your house for any borrowed books and return them to school.

TADPOLES
Our tadpoles are getting bigger every day. We are feeding them chopped, frozen lettuce (It must taste like algae!) We are hoping to have some frogs (or at least froglets) by the end of the school year. And no, don’t worry, I told the children that we need to return them to their original home pond and that they could not take them home as pets. (You’re welcome! - J)

MATH MEASUREMENT
We have been working on measuring in math. We measured a bed, sized for ourselves using our own feet for measuring (3 feet wide and 6 feet long). Then we measured a little bed using little feet. The children decided that it would be just-right for LiQin’s baby sister, Yan. Finally, we measured a giant-sized bed using giant-sized feet. The giant bed outline is on the floor of the chapel area. Then we talked about the need for standard size measurements.

HOMEWORK

I will not be sending home anymore homework packages for the rest of the year (All the kids are cheering!) I know how busy everyone is at this time of year and how we’d all rather be outside enjoying the beautiful weather (theoretically). Please keep up with the home-reading.

PLAY at NORDALE

We will be walking over to Nordale School on Tuesday to see a play called “Snow White”. We were invited to watch their grade 5 and 6 class performance. You should have received, signed and returned the permission slip last week.

LIBRARY BOOKS

The children will not be taking out any new library books for the remainder of the year. Please check around your house and return any that you might still have.

BIRD CHALLENGE

We totalled up all of our bird sightings for the class last week. We spotted a total of 1,534 birds including 24 different species over the long weekend. I’ve sent in our class totals and they will be added to the countrywide totals.

TADPOLE VISITORS

Luke brought us a few new visitors for our classroom last week. We have a tank full of tadpoles that we will be watching over the next few weeks.

BIRD CHALLENGE
Hopefully this weekend your child had some time to look for birds! Please send back the Bird Challenge Tally Booklet (folded white paper) so that we can send in our class total numbers of bird sightings. EVENING OF THE ARTS
This Wednesday is our annual Evening of the Arts. The children are all participating in some way during the evening – violin, jump rope, band, singing and various visual art projects. The evening begins at 6:30 pm. Please bring your lawn chairs or blankets.

OBJECTS and MATERIALS
This week we are starting our last science unit of the year on Objects and Materials. We will be looking at what things are made of and what properties they have (flexibility, waterproof, absorption...).

BIRD CHALLENGE
I am sending home our Bird Challenge for the long weekend. We will be starting on Thursday afternoon with a walk around the school and will mark in our bird sightings. Over the long weekend, whenever the children are outside, they can look for birds and mark them down on their pocket list. The field guide (blue booklet) is for them to keep. Please send the “Student pocket list and tally” back to school next week on Tuesday, May 24, where we will compile our results and send them in to the national office. PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
We are finishing up our study of Canada by comparing Manitoba to Prince Edward Island. I will be reading an abridged version of “Anne of Green Gables”.

FLAT STANLEYS
Our Flat Stanleys have started to arrive back in Winnipeg. As each one comes in, the children read their postcard information about the town or city in Canada where their Flat Stanley has visited. Every day the children ask about whether their Flat Stanley has arrived back at school. There is a large map of Canada posted on our hallway bulletin board showing where each Flat Stanley has visited and their accompanying postcards.

STORYTIME
I have started reading “Ralph S. Mouse” to the class. This book was written by Beverly Cleary. It is about a talking mouse who rides a motorcycle and decides to move into the local elementary school.

READING BINGO
We started a new reading activity in class last week. Each student has a BINGO card and each box has a different genre of book for them to read. (For example – a book of poetry, a children’s magazine, a science book about an animal, a sports book, etc...) After they have read a book (at their level), they fill out a short comment about the book and have a teacher check it. Once it has been checked, they can colour in that square on the Bingo card. If they complete one line, they can choose a prize. I am hoping that this will encourage them to try reading different types of books.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

SPRING TEA
Thank you to all of the parents and students who helped out with our annual Spring Tea. The school was “hopping” with activity on Saturday afternoon. The older students did a wonderful job of serving tea, the craft tables were busy, the younger students were counting out their money and trying to decide what they could buy, the bake sale goodies smelled heavenly, the kitchen “staff” made sure everyone got fed and the customers walked away smiling. Many other people were involved with a variety of other jobs and we thank everyone who participated in this event.

MUSIC MONDAY
This Monday, May 2, our school is participating in “Music Monday”. On this day, all across Canada, school children will be singing and bands will be playing together, to share and celebrate music in schools. We will all be singing a song called “Tomorrow is Coming”. We will be singing out on the big playground just before lunchtime (around 11:50 am). You are welcome to come out and sing along with us.

SPRING FLOWERS
Our class painted beautiful bouquets of spring flowers to decorate the gym walls for the Spring Tea. If you did not get a chance to see them, I am saving them to display at “The Evening of the Arts” which will be coming up on Wednesday, May 25. Don’t forget to mark this date on your calendars.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We are continuing our unit about Canada. The Flat Stanley’s were mailed out last week and we are awaiting their return. We have been looking at symbols of Canada and making a map of Canada.

SAVE YOUR OLD APPLIANCES
Our next science unit is about “Objects and Materials”. We will be studying the different materials what things are made of. We will be building robots from old appliances at the end of this unit so I would like to ask you to start saving and looking for small, old broken appliances now. We will not need them for another month and I have limited storage space here, so could you please keep them at home until I ask for them. We cannot take old TV’s or computers as they contain dangerous components. We can use – phones, blenders, hair dryers, toasters, fans, radios, clocks, speakers, dust busters... Thanks!

EASTER WEEK BOOK
We have been reading the Easter Story in class. Each day we have been making an illustration for a book using our “hands”. Last week we made Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, Praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, and Jesus’ Capture and Trial. This week we will be making Good Friday, the Empty Tomb and the Resurrection.

FLAT STANLEY PROJECT We will be sending off our Flat Stanleys this week. They will be on their way to different cities in Canada (and a few in the US). When they return from their travels, we will be posting them on a large map along with the postcards from their host city. SPRING TEA Our Annual Spring Tea and Craft Sale will soon be here. The date for this event is Saturday, April 30 and the theme this year is GARDENING. The older children will be serving in the tea room and there will be gardening demonstrations on going in the gymnasium. The craft sale tables will be set up in the chapel area and a bake sale will also be held. If you have any questions or are available to volunteer, please contact the PIP. Thanks! PLANTS We have just finished up a mini-unit about plants (this is part of our science unit about Living Things). We have been watching popcorn seeds sprout in Ziplock bags so we can see the roots, shoots and leaves grow. Last week we planted grass seeds in cups and are waiting for grass (hair) to grow on our “HAIRY”s. We have been learning about the different parts of a plant and what they do.

GRADE TWO VIOLIN

The grades two to four violin students are going on a field trip to the Manitoba Legislative Building to perform a concert on Wednesday, April 13. Parents should have returned a permission slip for this field trip last week. The grade two students are then going to perform at another school after lunch. The children will be leaving the school around 10:30 am. The children should all be wearing their BLUE SCHOOL SHIRT (and don’t forget their violins!)

FLAT STANLEY PROJECT

Last week I wrote about our Flat Stanley Projects. It sounds like postcards are difficult to come by these days. A couple of the parents bought extras for our class, so if you cannot find a postcard, do not worry we have some at school. I do need the address of a cooperating friend or relative sent to school as soon as possible. We would like to send out our “Flat People” on their trips this week. We are studying Canada so an address in Canada is preferred but if you do not have anyone in Canada and would like to write to someone in the U.S. that would be okay too. Thanks!

SPRING PUDDLES

Spring is here, hooray! But with spring, comes water and puddles. Our playground has a lot of water on it and we need to go outside to play so accidents are inevitable. Please send splash pants and rubber boots with your child. Extra socks and pants would also be a good idea.

WELCOME BACK! I hope that all of you had a fun and (somewhat) restful Spring Break. Homework packages are coming home today. I have added a math page for the grade ones. Everything else stays the same – home on Monday and due back on Friday. Please don’t forget to initial the bottom of the coloured front page before your child returns the package. FLAT STANLEY As part of our next social studies unit about Canada, we will be working on a project called “Flat Stanley”. Stanley Lambchop is a character in a book by Jeff Brown. He is squished flat by a bulletin board and has some wonderful adventures. One of his adventures is when he is folded up and mailed for a visit with friends. Our class will be making their own “Flat” people and mailing them to someone in Canada for a visit. What I need from the parents is two things – 1) The name and address of someone you know, who lives in another city in Canada. It can be a relative or a friend, but they need to be willing to participate and respond to our postcards from Winnipeg. 2) One postcard with a picture from Winnipeg. If you could please send the postcard and the name and address (on a separate piece of paper) to school this week, that would be wonderful. Please do not write the address on the postcard. We will be doing that at school together. If you do not have anyone to correspond with, please let me know and I will find someone for your child. Thanks for your help!

ST. PATRICK’S DAY
St. Patrick’s Day is on Thursday, March 17. We would like to build Leprechaun Traps the day before (Wednesday, March 16). Please send in re-cycle-able materials (boxes, toilet paper tubes, packing material, etc ... – please no glass). You can send in “stuff” starting on Monday. Don’t forget to wear something green on Thursday!

STUDENT –LED CONFERENCES
The report cards were sent home on Friday. Our student-led conferences begin this Tuesday after school. Please sign-up for a time slot on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. The sign-up sheets are posted on the front hall bulletin board.

PENGUIN PARTY
We have almost finished our Penguin unit. We are going to have a “Penguin Party” on Friday afternoon to celebrate. I thought that it would be fun to dress in black and white. They can bring a stuffed penguin to school if they have one (I have some at school so don’t go out and buy one) or maybe they could bring a stuffed seal, shark or killer whale (a penguin’s enemies). We’ll finish up our penguin activities, make Penguin Parfait, and watch a penguin movie.

REPORT CARDS
Second term report cards will be coming home this Friday, March 11. There are sign-up sheets on the hallway bulletin board. We are having student-led conferences again this term so there will be more than one family in the classroom at the same time. The students will be sharing their portfolios with their parents.

PENGUIN VIDEOS
We went down to the grade 7/8 classroom to use their smart-board on Friday. We watched video-clips of each type of penguin species. The children were very excited to watch “their” penguin. We used a site called (internet bird collection) and looked under (penguins). They have a collection of various videos for each penguin. I looked through them first and chose one video per penguin for the class. There were more to choose from that you may wish to watch with your child at home. MATH
We have been working on 2-D shapes and 3-D solids in math lately. Last week we built skeleton cubes out of marshmallows and toothpicks and then counted how many of each we needed.

PENGUIN PROJECTS
We are continuing our study about penguins. Next up, each child will be writing a research project about one species of penguin. (Did you know that there are 17 different types of penguin?) They will be looking for information on the computer and answering 5 basic questions about their penguin. We will also be painting life-sized portraits of our penguins.

SPELLING GAMES
One of the moms from our class recommended a website that helps children practice their spelling words with various games. The website is called ( www.spellingcity.com) Most of the games are free to play. The children just put in their spelling list words and they are set to play.

HOMEWORK

This week there is no school on both Monday and Friday so I am not sending home the regular homework packages. The children are asked to go on a shape hunt at their house and fill in the two pages of shape pictures for homework. We will also not be having spelling tests this week.

100 DAY

We celebrated the 100th day of school last Friday. Each of the children made a poster showing a different way to make 100 using their collections. We will be continuing some of the 100 day activities this week too. (It was too cold and we had too much to do last Friday!)

SPECIAL GUEST

We were invited to join the kindergarten class and their musical guest on Friday afternoon. Sonya played her guitar and kept us dancing and singing during last period. Thanks Sonya and Mrs. Butterfield for including us. We had lots of fun!

CHESS CLUB

All of the grade two students came out for chess club last Thursday during lunch recess. They played with an older student who walked them through a whole game. We meet every Thursday at lunch recess up until Spring Break. If your child has forgotten to return their permission form for chess club, please bring it back as soon as possible.

CHESS CLUB

The grade two students are bringing home a permission slip today regarding Chess Club. I taught the grade twos the “basics” of chess last week. All of the grade two students are in Chess Club so I need you to sign the form and return it to school this week. Chess Club meets on Thursdays at the lunch recess time in the chapel area (12:20 to 12:50). Our first day will be this Thursday, February 17. They will be playing with the older children at first for learning and practice and then with each other. We will be having an in-school tournament around Spring Break.

ESTIMATION JAR

The children will be taking turns bring home a plastic jar. This is our “estimation jar”. Please help your child find something at home to put in the jar. (For example – pennies, cotton balls, trading cards, small blocks, etc ...) The jar does not have to be full but there should be enough things so that they cannot count from the outside of the jar (50 to 100 is a good number). We are practicing our estimation skills. Please do not send anything breakable or perishable. The items will be returned home once we have counted them. It will take a while to get around to everyone – we are practicing patience too!

100 DAY

This Friday we will be celebrating the 100th day of school. Please help your child find and count out 100 “small things” and send them to school before Friday in a Ziploc bag labelled with your child’s name. You will not be getting these things back because we are using them for math (picture lots of glue). Some ideas – macaroni, toothpicks, buttons, bread ties, cereal, paper shapes, etc... Thank you for your help!

MRS. CAMPBELL
We were very sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Campbell last week. She has been an E.A. in our school for a number of years and we were blessed to have had her working in our classroom this year. She has gone to work in another school which is located closer to her home. We will miss her and hope she comes back for a visit from time to time. Our new E.A. will be starting later on this week.

SCIENCE
We have finished our unit about the NW Coast Aboriginal People. Our next unit is called “Characteristics and Needs of Living Things”. We will be focusing on PENGUINS. The children are allowed to bring in things to share if they are related to what we are studying. But after they share them, the items need to be stored in their lockers again.

NORTHWEST COAST ABORIGINALS
We are finishing up our latest social studies unit this week. If you have a chance, stop by and take a look at our Aboriginal Village mural on the bulletin board. We have totem poles, canoes and people dressed in cedar bark clothing. This week we will be painting our own animal crests.

GRADE ONE SPELLING
Our first grade one spelling test was on Friday. All of the children did quite well. We learned how to number a page and write the spelling word next to the matching number. (This can be very tricky!) Please let me know if your child is having a lot of difficulties with the homework.

GRADE TWO MATH
The grade twos have been working on adding double digit numbers (without carrying). We`ve gone over a couple of different methods to use for solving addition problems.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Last week we made some big totem poles for our room and we also started making our own mini totem poles for our Northwest Coast Aboriginal Village mural. This week we are making canoes, people, pictures and information cards for our village.

GRADE ONE HOMEWORK
The grade ones will be starting spelling in January. There are 4 homework sheets attached to their newsletter. Please complete the homework and return the whole package (with the coloured newsletter sheet attached and initialled) on Friday. They will be having a spelling test every Friday. The words start out quite easy, but your child may need help understanding the directions. Let me know if they are having any difficulties.

NORTH-WEST COAST ABORIGINAL PEOPLE
We took a break from our social studies unit during the Christmas season and now we will get back to our study of Canada’s north-west coast aboriginal peoples. If you had books or artifacts to share please speak to me.

CHRISTMAS SEASON
Wow! We have lots to do before Christmas Holidays! The last day of school will be Wednesday, December 22. Our first day back at school will be Thursday, January 6. STUDENT LED CONFERENCES
This week the students will be sharing their progress portfolios with their parents. There are sign-up sheets posted on the front hall bulletin board. Groups of families will be in the classroom at the same time, having their own child share their work. I will be in the classroom as well and am available for general questions. That night, I will have another sign-up sheet for parents who wish to meet with me individually, if you still want to meet after your child’s presentation.

WINTER CLOTHING
Brrr! Winter is here to stay (I’m afraid). Please make sure your child has lots of warm clothes at school. We almost always go outside for recess unless the temperature (with wind chill) reaches -30. Please send a change of clothes to keep in their lockers and extra socks and mitts are a good idea in case they get wet.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We have finished off our social studies unit about “Our Community” with a trip to the Manitoba Museum. (Thanks to all of the parents who came along with us!) Next up we will be studying the West Coast Aboriginal People of Canada. If anyone has artifacts or books on this topic and are willing to share them with us, please send them to school or speak to me.

REPORT CARDS
Report cards for the first term will be coming home on Friday, November 19. There will be Student-Led Conferences the following week. These will be a little different than we have had in the past. Conferences will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Nov 23 – 25) after school. You can sign-up for the time slot that you prefer along with 3 other families. All four groups will be in the classroom at the same time and having their own child share their learning portfolios with their parents. The teacher will be in the classroom if you have any general questions. I will also have some separate time slots to sign-up in, if you would like to meet and speak with me individually, but these would be optional conferences. Our goal is to have the children take more ownership of their learning and for them to have the opportunity to share and talk about their work and progress.
The conference time sheets will be posted on the front hall bulletin board soon.

FREE SCHOLASTIC BOOKS
Scholastic has sent two free books to each student in our classroom. One is called “I Am Skippyjon Jones” and the other is called “The Book Report From the Black Lagoon”. These are for your child to keep.

GRADE TWO SPELLING
I am sending home the grade two spelling booklets on Tuesday. These are for parents to look through and then send back to school before our next spelling test on Friday (Nov. 19). CHRISTMAS SHOEBOXES

PUMPKIN PARTY

Our Halloween Pumpkin Party is this Friday in the afternoon. The children can bring a costume to school in a plastic bag and leave it in their lockers until after lunch recess. Then we will be changing into costumes. (It gets too hot to wear them all day.) We will be having a costume parade through the school classrooms and then a mini-Sock Hop in the gym. We have a new student in our class. Her name is Avril and she is in grade one. She has four brothers! We want to welcome Avril and her family to our school.

SOCIAL STUDIES HOMEWORK

I am sending home an extra sheet of homework today. It asks your child to name one community in Manitoba that they have visited and what they did or saw there. (We are looking for information about what you find in different communities.) There is room at the bottom to draw a picture. We will be finding these locations on a map of Manitoba. Please send in this sheet for Thursday. Remember, there is no school on Friday, so the homework is due and the spelling test will be on Thursday instead.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PARTIES

Each year I divide up the class parents and ask them to bring a snack for one of our class parties. This way everyone has one turn. If your party day does not suit you, perhaps you could trade with another parent or let me know and I will make other arrangements. Thanks!

FALL SUPPER

Our school’s annual Fall Supper will soon be here! You should have received an information package a few weeks ago. The supper will be held on Saturday, October 23. Make sure you purchase your tickets soon – they were sold out last year. The PIP (parents in partnership) group is still looking for auctions items and volunteers for this event. There are sign-up sheets on the front hall PIP bulletin board if you are available. Hope to see you all there.

VIOLIN INFORMATION

There is an instructional video set up on our school’s web site for parents and students. Go to (www.bsls.ca) and look under “for students”. Mr. B. has also been sending home a blank calendar to use as a practice log. Just initial your child’s practice nights on the calendar. Mr. B. checks the log once a week. I know most students keep the log in their violin cases and then it is at school when needed and easy to find after practices.

SENSATIONAL SCIENCE

Our first science unit about “Our Senses” is almost finished. Next up we will be taking a look at Our Community in social studies.

TOUCH BOOKLETS
I sent home a letter on Friday regarding some homework for the weekend. Your child was to look for small things around your house that had various textures. (hard, soft, smooth, rough, bumpy, crunchy) Please send these items to school in a small Ziplock bag by Tuesday. Thanks!

DRUM MAKING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Our school is having some very special visitors in November. They are members of “Fubuki Daiko” (Japanese drumming group). They will be running workshops for our students. We do need to make our own drums for this special musical week. It involves – washing and wrapping car tires with duct tape. We need some parent volunteers who would be able to come and make these drums for us, probably during the week after the Fall Supper. If you are interested and available, please contact Leslie Kolmel (admissions@bsls.ca). I know that she would be very happy to hear from you!

TASTE TEST

On Friday we used our sense of taste to do a taste test. The children had to close their eyes and taste a sample of some food. Then we talked about what it tasted like – salty, sweet, sour, spicy etc... Next, they had to guess what they had tasted. They were more than willing to participate and they all did a wonderful job of identifying different tasting foods.

ALL ABOUT ME BAGS
Don’t forget to send the paper bags back to school this week so the children can do their presentations.

RALLY SUNDAY
Next Sunday, September 19, there will be a special church service here at the school called “Rally Sunday”. This service begins at 10:30 and will be followed by a lunch. Our new church/school pastor will be there (Pastor Schnarr). All of the church and school families are invited to attend.

GRADE ONE HOMEWORK
Today the grade ones will be bringing home a Math Game Bag for homework. This bag will be sent home on Monday and needs to be returned on Friday. Each game has a recording sheet that should be completed. It will be attached to the weekly newsletter. This game is for your child to play WITH YOU. They may need some help with the recording sheet at first. There is also a related math book included in the bag for you to read TO your child. Each bag also has a list on the front describing the items that belong in each game bag. Please check the list to make sure everything is returned. Someone else will be getting that game bag next week. Have fun!

GRADE TWO HOMEWORK
Attached to each newsletter will be the homework sheets for that week. They are sent home on Monday and need to be returned on Friday. You and your child can arrange when the homework will be completed. Some of the children like to do a little every night, some like to finish early or if you have a busy evening you can skip a night. The children have four nights to complete their homework. This week I am sending only spelling. Other sheets will be added next week. There will be a spelling test on Friday – 10 words and 2 sentences.

WOW! Our first few days of the new school year are almost over. We’ve been very busy!

HOT LUNCH ORDERS
You should have received an order form from the Lunch Lady for a hot hamburger lunch on Monday, September 20. This order form and payment are due by this coming Monday, September 13 if you want your child to have a hot lunch. Ordering hot lunch is optional.

HANDWASHING
We have been reading about germs and how to fight them at school this week. We are (hopefully) growing bacteria germs on potato slices in our closet. We got the germs from our hands and desks. We’ll check them next week. We have also talked about washing our hands thoroughly. Last year some of the children brought hand-sanitizer to school and I have decided this year that I would rather they learn how to wash their hands properly with soap and water.

WEEKEND HOMEWORK
The children will be bringing home an “All About Me” paper bag on Friday. The front has a flower filled with “Numbers About Me”. Over the weekend each child should fill the bag with a few items that will help their classmates get to know them better (3 or 4 items are enough). They should bring the bag back to school next week and they will be presenting their bags to the class. The items need to be small enough to fit into the bags. (Please do not send anything valuable or breakable.) The items will be returned after the presentations.

Examples – a family photo, a soccer medal, a favourite book, a drawing, a picture of a pet, a stuffed animal that grandma gave them, a ballet shoe, a swimming badge etc... almost anything that shares information about themselves and how we are all special and different.

HOCKEY CARDS

I hope all of you received the note on Friday regarding hockey cards at school. There have been a number of concerns from both parents and teachers so we decided that the simplest solution would be to have NO hockey cards or collection books at school or at the Before and After School Care Program. LIGHT BULB DELIVERY

As our final stewardship project of the year our school has teamed up with Manitoba Hydro and will be delivering CFL light bulbs and information packages to our school’s neighbours. We had a student information session last Wednesday when a representative from Manitoba Hydro taught us about the environmental benefits of using CFL light bulbs. I am sending home a permission slip for you to sign so that we can go on a short walk around the neighbourhood and deliver some of the packages. If you would like to come along on our walk, you are most welcome. Please sign the form and return it to school by Wednesday, June 16.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! JUNE 2--PARIS

BIRD CHALLENGE
I sent home a tally sheet for your child to keep track of their bird sightings over the weekend, but ... I know that it was very wet and rainy and not too many birds were out and about. So if you were unable to (or did not have the time to) complete the bird count don’t worry. Anytime this week you can complete the count and then send it in by Friday. Maybe just go for a walk one evening or as your family is watching a soccer or baseball game outside, take the pocket tally with you and mark off the birds that you see. Even if you are unable to add anymore bird sightings to the tally, send it in anyways. We did go for a walk as a class on Friday afternoon and everyone has some bird sightings marked down already. Thanks for your help and your patience.

BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE
As I’m sure most of you heard, the butterflies started emerging from the chrysalises this week. The children spent a lot of time with their noses pressed against the aquarium glass in awe as we watched each new butterfly crawl its way out and dry its crumpled wings. We started feeding them sugar-water and watched as their straw-like mouths (proboscis) uncurled and sucked up the liquid. God’s miracles surround us every day! We will be setting them free on Monday – hopefully the sun will be shining.

NOTE – There is no more homework for the rest of the year.

CATERPILLAR CHANGES

WOW! Our caterpillars changed into chrysalises last week. It was amazing to watch them squirm out of their last skin and see something totally different underneath. Now we have to watch and wait for 10 days and then hopefully – BUTTERFLIES!

EVENING of the ARTS

Our school’s Evening of the Arts is tomorrow – Wednesday, May 26. The evening begins at 6:30 pm and should end around 8:00. Mr. B. would like the violins to arrive a few minutes early so that they have time to tune up. Don’t forget to bring your violins and lawn chairs as we will be sitting outside. This evening’s schedule includes – the violin performance, kindergarten song, the band performance, Jump Rope for Heart Display and an art display. Friends and extended family are most welcome. Hope to see everyone there!

BIRD CHALLENGE

Our class will be participating in the annual Bird Challenge. This event has groups counting birds that they see during the spring. Each group sends in their total counts which are then compiled for national statistics. More information will be coming home this Friday. I am hoping that each child will be able to do some bird watching this weekend.

EVENING of the ARTS
Next Wednesday evening, May 26 is BSLS’s “Evening of the Arts”. This event will begin at 6:30 pm and finish around 8:00. The violin groups will be performing as well as the band. The kindergarten class has a special musical number and the Jump Rope Club will also be performing. The children will also have art projects on display that evening. Make sure that you mark your calendars and plan on attending this special evening.

*Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs as we will be outside (hopefully).

PAINTED LADIES
Our Painted Lady caterpillars arrived last week and we have been watching them grow bigger and bigger each day. Inside each small plastic cup we placed special food (it looked and felt like oatmeal) and 2 small caterpillars. Within 10 to 14 days they will begin to form a chrysalis with a pupa inside. Within another 10 to 14 days they should have changed into butterflies and break out of their chrysalis shells. After a few days we will be releasing them outside. We have been learning a lot about butterflies in class.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Last week an envelope was sent home with your child regarding collecting donations for the Heart and Stroke Foundation as part of Jump Rope for Heart. Your child may like to collect sponsors or you may choose not to participate. Either way the children are welcome to come out to the jump rope practices at noon recess on Wednesdays. This group of children will be performing a jump rope routine at The Evening of the Arts on - Wednesday, May 26.

ATHLETES IN ACTION

This week a group of young athletes are visiting our school on Friday, May 14, and will be conducting Phys. Ed. Classes for the children.

MUSIC MONDAY

This Monday, May 3, is Music Monday all across the country. Students from across Canada will stop classes and meet outside to sing (or play an instrument) at the same time. They will all be singing a song written by Serena Ryder called “SING, SING”. We were practicing last week and the children sound WONDERFUL! FIELD TRIP
Both of the grade one and two classes will be going on a field trip to the Aviation Museum. I am sending home a permission slip today and the trip is planned for May 17 (a Monday morning). We will need parent drivers and chaperones so if you are available please fill out the information section on the form and return them as soon as possible. Thanks.
POSITION and MOTION
We will be finishing up our Social Studies unit this week and will begin our next science unit about Position and Motion. Our field trip to the Aviation Museum will fit right in. We are also expecting some crawly visitors to arrive in a couple of weeks – stay tuned for more updates.
ART
Last week the children painted to music! We talked about how different types of music made us feel and what lines and colours they might choose to go with each style of music. We are going to be working with clay this week – learning some different hand-building techniques.

SPRING TEA

Thank you so much to all of the parents and students who helped out with our annual Spring Tea and Craft Sale. It was lots of fun and the food was delicious. We received many compliments about the wonderful job the student servers did at the tea. We also want to thank all of the families who came out for tea and shopping in the craft rooms. We appreciate your support.

CHARLOTTE’S WEB

I have started reading “Charlotte’s Web” to the class. This story is about a friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a spider named Charlotte. It was written by E. B. White.

EARTH DAY

Last Thursday, April 22, was Earth Day. Each classroom spent part of our day outside cleaning up the litter on our schoolyard and around our neighbourhood. We talked about taking care of our planet and being good stewards of God’s creation.

PHONE NUMBERS

Our class has been working on knowing their address and phone number. Most of the children already know their phone number. If your child does not, please take some time to practice it with them. It is very important if they ever get lost. Some of the children know their house number but not their street names. We will be working on how to address a letter.

BABY MCCREA

Ms. McCrea had her baby this weekend, on Friday evening! He is a 10 pound, 1 ounce baby boy – wow! His name is Dekari Linken Thomas William McCrea (I hope the spelling is correct). We thank God for the baby’s safe arrival and ask God to bless Ms. McCrea’s new family!

SPECIAL VISITORS
Last Thursday we had some special visitors to our school. There were three young ladies from Crew Ministries who sang with the students and performed a skit all about being stuck in sin. The children had a great time singing along, doing the actions and meeting the singers. We also got to meet our new principal Mrs. Gerry Thiessen who was able to join us for the concert and introduce the performers.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Last week we started a new unit about maps and globes. We started making a topographical map of our own islands and this week we will be painting them. The maps had to include – a bay, a lake, a river, a mountainous area and water.

READING LOGS
Last week I sent home a reading log that covered most of last week and on through this week, up until Thursday night as usual. I did not send a reading log home over Spring Break. I know that they do take some time to fill out and remember to return to school but they really do help me out when tracking the children’s reading progress. Thanks.

This year the Annual Spring Tea and Craft Sale is being held earlier than usual. The TEA will be on Saturday, April 24, here at school. Don’t forget to mark the date on your calendars. The older students will be serving tea and lunch and there will be lots of amazing craft tables for shopping. The younger students will be making the decorations.

BUSY WEEK
The last week before Spring Break was unbelievably busy. We had a whirlwind trip to Ethiopia. We wrote a children’s book called “When I was a Baby ...” and presented it to Ms. McCrea. We said good-bye to Ms. McCrea (for a while) and are anxiously awaiting news of her baby’s arrival. Many families travelled during Spring Break and we prayed for their safe return back to Winnipeg. ETHIOPIA WEEK
This week all of the students will be travelling from class to class experiencing different activities from Ethiopia. (Geography, Art, Music, Sports and Games, Food, Animals, Culture) Each student has a passport which will be stamped after each visit.

GOOD-BYE MS. MCCREA
This is Ms. McCrea’s last week here with us at school before her baby’s big debut. We are going to miss her but I know that all of the children are looking forward to meeting her baby when (he/she) finally arrives.

RACE TO 100
All of the children made their own game boards called “RACE TO 100”. We have played a few times at school and they will be bringing them home to play with their families. The rules are very simple. There are 2 players with a different colour Bingo chip each. You take turns rolling the dice and move forward the number of dots rolled as you race to 100. The first person to reach 100 – wins the game!

PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT CONFERENCES

The report cards for the second term of school will be coming home on Wednesday. Later on this week there will be sign-up sheets posted on the front hall bulletin boards. Please sign-up for a conference timeslot that works for you. If you are unable to come during one of the scheduled times, please speak to me and we can arrange an alternative day. I would like the students to come along with you to the conferences so that they can show you some of their work and talk about their learning.

The conferences will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week – March 16 – 18, after school and evenings.

STUDENT TEACHER Our student teacher this year, Lindsey Kyle, will have her last day with us on Thursday. We wanted to thank her for all of her help this year and we wish her well as she continues her education. We know that she will make an excellent teacher one day!

ETHIOPIA WEEK

During the week of March 22 – 25, our whole school will be studying the country of Ethiopia. This is the country where our sponsor child, Rehimet, lives. The students will be participating in various activities to learn all about Ethiopia (art, music, food, culture, geography, games, etc...) OWL VISITOR
On Thursday we had the chance to meet “Bardy” the Barred Owl from Manitoba Wildlife Rehabilitation Organization. She had been injured by a car and was unable to fly properly so she was trained as an education animal. The children were amazingly quiet when she first arrived. We learned a lot about owls and were fascinated to see a live owl up close.

100th DAY of SCHOOL Our 100th day of school is sometime this week (we might have gotten a little mixed up on our count). So our class will be celebrating 100 Day this FRIDAY. We will be doing some math activities all about the number 100. On Friday each child needs to bring “100 things” in a ziplock baggie. They need to be something that you do not want returned because we will be gluing. Some examples are – cotton balls, macaroni, cereal, toothpicks, buttons, etc ... Please have your child count then out at home and then bring them to school in a baggie with their name on it. If you wish, you can send them to school earlier in the week so they are all set for Friday. We will also be reading 100 books in our classroom over the next few months. If we reach our 100 books goal, Scholastic will donate money to save 100 square km of boreal forest.

I LOVE TO READ WEEK
Next week we are celebrating “I LOVE TO READ” with special spirit days and events planned all week. Monday (February 22) is “WACKY WORD” day. Wear words on your clothing.

I LOVE TO READ MONTH
February is I Love to Read Month. We will be having various activities throughout this month to encourage reading. One activity is to collect 20 nights of home reading over the month of February – I am using the Home Reading Logs that you and your child are already filling out so don’t forget to send them back to school every Friday. Each child who reads to meet our class goal of 20 nights will receive a certificate from the Premier.

SPELLING TEST ON THURSDAY There is no school on Friday so the homework is due and the spelling tests will be on Thursday instead. Grade One Parents – you do not have to correct your child’s homework but could you please flip through and make sure that everything is complete and is relatively neat. The students are supposed to do their homework in pencil not pen (or marker or big, fat crayon ...)

OWLS in the FAMILY
I have been reading a book aloud to the class. It is called “Owls in the Family” and was written by Canadian author Farley Mowat. The story takes place in Saskatoon and is about a boy and his two pet owls.

OWL BOOKS
Thanks to all of the families who have been letting us share your owl books with the class. The children are very excited about our study of owls and already know so much! Does anyone have a stuffed owl that they would be willing to bring in and let us take a look at?

CHESS CLUB
I went over the basic explanation and rules of chess on Friday with the grade twos. We will be having a couple of practice games in class and then they will be playing a practice game with an older student on Thursday at Chess Club. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome to the year 2010. I hope that your Christmas holiday was merry and restful. Thank you for all of the beautiful gifts that I received for Christmas – they were thoughtful and delicious.

GRADE ONE HOMEWORK The grade one homework package is new. The students are all finished the Math Bag Games and now they are bringing home spelling words for homework. The homework schedule remains the same – goes home on Monday and is due on Friday. They will have a spelling test on Fridays. They are starting off with only 5 words (hopefully it will be easy to begin with). There are 4 pages of homework – different ways to practice and use the words. The grade one words are a mixture of sight words and word families. Some children may need help understanding the directions to begin with. Let me know if you/they have any questions or problems.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS I am sending home the Scholastic book orders for January. I would like them back next week by Wednesday, January 13. The December orders did not arrive before we closed for Christmas break. If you ordered books in December, they should arrive this week.

SCIENCE We did not quite finish our science unit about Air and Water before Christmas so that is what we will concentrate on this week. Next week we will be starting a new science unit about OWLS. (Growth and Changes in Animals)

WINTER CLOTHING Please send all the winter clothing items with your child (jacket, ski pants, mitts, hat, boots ...). We try to go outside everyday and the weather often changes during the day. Extra socks to leave at school are a good idea too.

SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Our school Christmas Concert is next week, Wednesday, December 16. The concert will be held at Beautiful Savior Church on St. Mary’s Road. The concert begins at 6:30 but we are asking that the children be at the church by 6:00 so they have time to tune their violins and get organized.

We are also asking each family to bring one dozen dainties to share after the concert. Don’t forget to bring your violin and a pair of shoes.
Lastly, we ask that the children to dress in their “best” Christmas clothes.

CHRISTMAS CHEER BOARD HAMPERS
For our December mission project we are making hampers for the Christmas Cheer Board. Our class will be making one hamper for a family in Winnipeg. We have divided up the suggested list and each child has chosen one slip (usually 2 or 3 items). Please bring in these items as soon as possible. The hampers will be delivered next week. We are also asking for $2.00 from each family in order to buy perishable items (turkey, milk ...). If you are interested in buying gifts for the children in this family, please let me know – we will have their names and ages soon. If there is any family willing to deliver our hamper to the family, please let me know as well. Thanks for all of your support!

GRADE ONE MATH BAGS
We are coming to the end of the Math Bag Games. Some of the children have completed all 12 of them and some have only one more to take home. If your child does not bring home a math bag, don’t worry, they are finished or are waiting for someone else to finish.

PERFORMANCE AT THE FORKS
You should have received a yellow permission slip on Friday regarding a field trip to the Forks to perform – violin, band, and choir. Please sign and return this form by Wednesday so that we can make sure we have enough drivers. AND YES we do need drivers and chaperones for this event. All of the students from the school will be participating except the nursery and kindergarten. We will be leaving the school around 9:30. The performances are at 10:00, 10:30 and 11:00. We should be back at the school around 11:30. The children will be watching the other performers while they are waiting.
The date for this event is next Monday, December 7!

WATER DIARY
If you haven’t done so already, please send back the water diary that your child was supposed to keep last weekend.

AIR and WATER
We have almost completed our science unit on Air and Water. We are going to begin our OWL unit after Christmas.

WATER DIARY
Your child brought home a “Water Diary” on Friday. We started the diary at school on Friday and they were to continue keeping track of their water usage for one whole day (until Saturday). If they forgot, please keep track for one day and then send the diary sheet back to school. We will be talking about how important water is to our everyday life and how we need to not waste water.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES
This week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings we will be having conferences. Don’t forget to sign up on the bulletin board or speak to me about an alternative time. I would like to students to come along to the conferences so they can share their portfolios with you.

CANADIAN CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK
The Canadian Children’s Book Centre and TD Bank Financial Group have provided copies of “Let’s Go! The Story of Getting from There to Here” for every grade one student in Manitoba. (Because we have a multi-aged class, we received enough for the 2’s as well.) Your child should have brought a copy of this book home on Friday. It is theirs to keep. Canadian Children’s Book Week is from November 14 to November 21.

CHRISTMAS SHOEBOXES
The ambulances arrived on Thursday to pick our shoeboxes. The children were very excited to deliver the Christmas shoeboxes to the waiting paramedics. Thanks for your help in supporting this mission project.

DOGGY VISITORS
We had some furry friends visit our classroom on Friday. The lady who will be coordinating the “Reading with Dogs” program came to talk to us about bite prevention. The children all practiced “STOP, DROP and CURL” in case they are ever attacked by a dog. They also learned to read dog body language and how to respect strange dogs. After the presentation, the class got to make friends with the dogs. Brick and Dizzy got a lot of pats and hugs!

FIELD TRIP
We are off to the MTYP (Manitoba Theatre for Young People) on Thursday. We are going to see “The Jungle Book”. Please return the permission slip to school A.S.A.P. If you have volunteered to drive and chaperone please make sure the office has a copy of your license and registration before the day of the trip. The play begins at 1:00 pm and we need to be there 15 minutes ahead of time. So we will need to leave the school at 12:30.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
Last week you should have received a letter explaining our next Stewardship Project which is filling Christmas shoeboxes. Today our class discussed what kind of gifts should be included in our shoeboxes and we divided up our list between the students. We need these items at school before Friday, November 13. The boys will be making up one shoebox for a 5 to 9 year old boy and the girls will be making up one shoebox for a 5 to 9 year old girl. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

SNACK PARENTS
This year we have four class parties – Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and End of the Year. Easter falls during Spring Break so we will not be having a party for Easter. I divided up the families into groups and assigned them for one of the class parties throughout the year. If the party date that you get does not work out for you, perhaps you can trade with one of the other parents. If you are unable to or do not wish to bring snacks, please let me know and I will arrange something else. Keep in mind that nuts and peanuts should not be sent to school. INTRODUCTIONS
I don’t think that I have introduced the adults who spend some days in our classroom to all of the parents yet. First, we have Ms. LeeAnn Edwards an EA (educational assistant) who spends every day with us. Next, we have Mrs. Lona Woods, who volunteers in our class on Mondays and Fridays. (She also happens to be my mom.) Thirdly, we have Ms. Lindsey Kyle, who comes in on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. She is a student teacher from the U of W. We are very grateful for all of their help and support in our classroom.

WINNIPEG HARVEST
You might have noticed a cardboard box in the front hallway with a “Winnipeg Harvest” sign on the side. Our Chapel theme this year is Stewardship and each month we have planned a different activity to encourage the students to develop hearts and hands that serve. We understand that families may not be able to participate in every monthly activity but we hope that each family would be able to choose a few during the year. Winnipeg Harvest is looking for non-perishable food items. Thanks for your support!

HOMEWORK PACKAGESPlease keep the front coloured newsletter page attached to the homework page(s). This helps me know which date the homework is from and who it belongs to. It is also helpful if the children do not leave the homework inside of the grade one math bags, but keep it in their Froggy Bags. There is a “Homework Basket” for them to turn it in. COMPASSION CANADA
This Wednesday at chapel we will be starting our Compassion Canada Project. The students and staff at Beautiful Savior School will be sponsoring a child in Ethiopia. Her name is Rehimet Mohamed. There is a letter coming home today with more information regarding this project. Our goal is to develop our students’ awareness of caring for our world and other people and to nurture hearts that serve.

ALLERGIES
As you already know our school is a NUT-SAFE environment. Please make sure that you do not send peanuts or tree nuts of any kind to school in your child’s snack or lunch. We do have one child in our classroom with a severe allergy to peanuts and nuts. We also have one child with an allergy to eggs but she has to actually touch or eat the egg to have an adverse reaction. We also have one child with wheat and milk intolerances – so she just needs to be careful with what she eats. We may also have one child with an allergy to shellfish.
SO – What this means is that the children are NEVER to share their food with other children, even though they are trying to be kind, we need to be very careful about lunches and snacks. Parents, if there are any other allergies or special food restrictions for your child please let me know. This is the information that we have on our school records.

SNAKE PITS
Every second year the grade one and two class takes a field trip out to the Narcisse snake pits in the fall. The timing for this visit is different every year depending upon the weather. I will be sending out some more information about the trip later this week but we will probably be going the following week (September 28 – October 2). We will definitely need parent drivers and chaperones so keep us in mind. You DO NOT have to pick up or hold the snakes in order to come along. It takes about one hour to drive there and we will be eating lunch at the picnic grounds, so plan on being away for the whole day! The trip is alwayssss lotsssss of fun!

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
This is the newsletter that will be sent home once a week, usually on Mondays. Included in the newsletter will be some of the activities that we have been working on during that week, upcoming events, reminders, announcements, etc... I will be sending home a paper copy of the newsletter attached to your homework sheets as well as sending you a copy by e-mail. If you do not receive your e-mail copy, please let me know. These newsletters are also posted on our school blog site.
GRADE TWO HOMEWORK
Attached to each newsletter will be the homework sheets for that week. They are sent home on Monday and need to be returned on Friday. You and your child can arrange when the homework will be completed. Some children like to do a little every night, some like to finish early or if you have a busy evening, you can skip a night. The children have four nights to complete their homework. This week I am sending spelling only. Other sheets will be added next week. There will be a spelling test on Friday – 10 words and 2 sentences.
GRADE ONE HOMEWORK
Grade ones will be bringing home a Math Bag Game for homework. This bag will be sent home on Monday and needs to be returned on Friday. Each game has a recording sheet that should be filled out. This game is for your child to play WITH YOU. They may need some help with the recording sheet at first. Try to play this game a few times during the week. There is also a related math book included in the bag for you to read TO your child. Each bag also has a list on the front describing the items that belong in each game.

GRADE ONE AND TWO
Please return the entire homework package on Friday (with the coloured front newsletter sheet still attached). There is a space at the bottom of each newsletter for your initials and room for notes. The other part of your child’s homework is HOME-READING. An information sheet regarding the home-reading program is attached to this newsletter. Please let me know if you have any questions.

PIP BARBEQUE

TAKE A LOOK FOR BOOKS
Please check around your house for classroom books. Most of the library books have been returned – YEAH! My classroom books should have a bright green sticker on them as well as a white sticker with my name on the front cover. I would appreciate having all of the books returned this week.

GREEN SCHOOL
Thank you for sending in the “GREEN” leaves for the big tree in the front hall. We are well on our way to meeting our 200 green ideas challenge.
Our class also made the recycle posters that are hanging up underneath the big tree. If you would like more leaves, just write me a note or pick some up yourselves from the classroom or the office.

ONE MORE FIELD TRIP
Next week we have been invited to join the kindergartens on their field trip to the MINT. Kahia’s dad works there and is willing to be our personnel tour guide. I know that we are going on Friday, June 19 in the morning but the specific times have not been worked out quite yet. More information and the permission slip will follow soon. POST CARD and ADDRESS
Don’t forget to send a blank postcard (featuring Winnipeg) to school ASAP, along with the address of a family friend or relative who would be willing to send a postcard back to us. They should live in a different part of Canada.
FLAT STANLEY PROJECT
We are reading a book in class this week called “Flat Stanley”, by Jeff Brown. In this book, Stanley Lambchop has been squashed flat by a falling bulletin board. One of the advantages to being flat is that his parents can put him in a large envelope and mail him for a visit to his friends in other places.
For our project, students will be making their own flat person. The children will be mailing the flat people along with the postcards about Winnipeg, to a different person in a different Canadian city. We are using this project to enhance our study about Canada.
When the “Stanleys” are returned with postcards from around Canada we will be posting them on the hall bulletin board and keeping track of where they visited and the information the brought back with them. I would like to mail the “Stanleys” out by the long weekend, so don’t forget your postcard and address.
Again - if you do not have a person to write to, let me know and I will find someone for your child. THANKS!

TADPOLE NEWS
WOW! We now have a thousand tadpoles in our aquarium. I might have to send a few back to the Kemerle’s pond before they get too crowded. We have been keeping a Tadpole Journal of their progress. I read on the Internet that tadpoles would eat frozen lettuce so I thought that we would try it out and believe it or not they are eating it like crazy!

SPRING TEA
Thank you to all of the parents and children who helped out at our Spring Tea. Thank you too, to all of the people who brought their appetites and enjoyed a delicious lunch and shopped at the craft tables.
It was a great day!

CANADA
We are starting our final Social Studies unit about Canada. Part of this unit will be to send a postcard out to a family friend or relative who lives in another part of Canada. The children will be writing about what Winnipeg is like and hopefully receiving a postcard in return about life in a different part of Canada.
*NEEDED
- Each child needs one blank postcard. The picture should show some aspect about the city of Winnipeg (Golden Boy, Legislative Building, Assiniboine Zoo, Manitoba animals, parks, cityscape, etc…)
- They will also need the name and address of a friend or relative who would be willing to send a letter/and postcards back to us and who lives in a different part of Canada
Please send in these two items (blank postcard and the address on a separate piece of paper (we also want to practice writing addresses)) to school some time this week. THANKS!

If your child has no one to correspond with, please let me know and I will find someone for him or her.

TADPOLES to FROGS
We have an aquarium in our classroom with tadpole eggs inside. Hopefully we will be able to watch them hatch and grow. (We’ve had a minor set back this weekend and had a short burial at sea for clutch number one. Hopefully the Kemerle’s will be able to bring us a new clutch this week and we can begin again.)

OOPS # TWO - EASTER PARTY
I also forgot to remind the snack parents about bringing food for an Easter party last week. Some years, Easter happens during Spring Break and we don’t have time for a party so I didn’t remember this year. We actually had so much to do on Thursday that we would have had trouble fitting in a party. I thought that if it was okay with those snack parents, we could move their day to the end of the year party instead.

FAMILY FOLKLORE

ROBOT STUFF
Don’t forget to keep collecting old appliances and “stuff” for our robots. We are not building them yet, so please hang on to it for a few more weeks. We are also going to need boxes for our robots, so keep an eye out for them as well. (soft cardboard “cereal-type” boxes as well as corrugated boxes)

EASTER WEEKEND
There will be no school this Friday (Good Friday) as well as Easter Monday. That makes the next two weeks only four days long each. It gives the children one less day for homework but a nice long-weekend.

EASTER BASKETS and EGGS
I would like to make mini Easter baskets with the children on Thursday. I will need a two litre pop bottle for each child. If you have more than one, please send it to school. I would also like to dye Easter eggs – so on Thursday, could you please send 2 HARD BOILED EGGS to school with your child. (Wrapped up in layers of paper towel and placed in a margarine container usually works to keep the eggs safe while traveling.)

AUSTRALIA WEEK
G’day Mate! Welcome to Australia week. We will be traveling around the school during the afternoons this week learning about Australia.

SPRING BREAK HOMEWORK
I have one assignment for the students to work on over Spring Break in addition to keeping up with their regular home reading. Attached to the back of this homework package is a project called “Family Folklore”. Please read the directions and keep the back sheet for a reference. The children are being asked to interview an older relative (or family friend) about what life was like when they were young. If they could complete the rough draft over Spring Break, then we can work on the final project in April. Let me know if you have any questions.

FIELD TRIP to MTYP
We are off to the theatre again this Friday to the MTYP. We will be seeing “46 Circus Acts in 45 Minutes”.
Please sign the permission form and return it to school ASAP. We will again need parent drivers and chaperones, if you are able to help please fill out the appropriate section on the form. Thanks again!

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
We have finished with our social studies unit comparing PEI and Manitoba. We have watched part of the Anne of Green Gables movie and read most of the book. Last Thursday the children worked on a sorting activity in the chapel area. Teams of four children had to sort pictures, maps and words into two groups – Manitoba and PEI. I was very impressed with how much information they remembered and how well the teams worked together!

FAMILY FOLKLORE

This year, we have been studying different communities in Canada. We have looked at how these communities have changed over time. I would
like the students to learn a little about their own family history and how life has changed for them.

THE ASSIGNMENT –

1) Find an older relative that is willing to share some stories with you.
(A grandparent, an older aunt or uncle, a family friend or neighbour, you could even ask a parent.)

2) Ask them to share a story or stories with you about when they were young. It could be one longer story (example- Their family’s trip across the ocean when they came to Canada.) Or it could be a number of short memories (example – When my grandma was young, she had to milk the cow before she left for school every morning.) Even if you are interviewing a parent, life was different when they were young (example – When my dad was young they didn’t have computers.)

3) The story should be short and simple, using the children’s own language. There only needs to be a sentence or two per page and perhaps five to seven pages long. The grade twos should be able to write the rough draft by themselves. Some of the grade ones are going to need a parent to scribe for them, but let them tell you what to write.

4) All you need to do at home is write the rough draft. It can be written on notebook paper with a line drawn to separate where the pages begin and end. At school we will work on the final draft (using the computers to type the story out) and do the illustrations for each page.

5) I am hoping that the rough drafts can be back at school after Spring Break – April 6.

CLWR SCHOOL KIT COLLECTION
Did you remember? - Our school is collecting items for CLWR (Canadian Lutheran World Relief) school kits. These kits will be sent to children in third world countries. Each month they are collecting a different item for the school kits. This month – March – they are asking for pencil sharpeners. There is a big yellow collection box in the chapel area if you would like to bring in these items. Thanks!

SOCIAL STUDIES
This week we will be continuing our comparison of Manitoba and Prince Edward Island. Last week we wove bulrush mats (out of paper) that the Micmac Aboriginals of P.E.I. used to make their wigwam houses.

COMPUTERS
The children have finished their own alphabet books in computer class. We used a program called KidPix to find pictures that started with every letter of the alphabet.

CLASS PARTY
Our class filled up their HOMEWORK CHARTS and earned a class party. The children voted to have a -
“Movie/Pajama/Popcorn/Stuffed Animal Party!”
(As you can tell we had to do a lot of combining and voting.)
So… this Friday afternoon is our party (February 6).
1) The kids should bring their pajamas to school in a bag.
We will be changing after lunch recess. Warm pajamas would be the best choice. The children do not have to change if they do not want to.
2) Bring a stuffed animal to school.
3) I’ll be providing the popcorn.
4) I think that we will be watching “Happy Feet” in honour of our penguin unit but we’ll take a vote next week. It will be rated “G”.
(And NO, it is not a sleepover party. You still need to pick up your (very excited) child after school as usual!)

ROBOT PARTS
Thanks for the old appliances that some parents already brought in last week. We won’t be building our robots until after Spring Break (end of March) so if you could store them at home until then, I would appreciate it. I only have limited storage space at school. But if you need to, you can bring some of the appliances in now.

PENGUIN PROJECTS
Our penguin research projects are almost complete. This week we will be working on our life-size paintings, experiencing how penguin bodies (blubber, feathers and air) insulate them from the cold and comparing our bodies to a penguin’s body.

CHOIR
You should have received a permission slip to sign if your child was interested in singing in the choir on Thursdays at noon recess. If your child is interested and you have not sent back a permission slip, please let me know and I will get one out to you. We had 23 children out last week and they sounded beautiful!

PENGUIN PROJECTS
We are still working on our penguin research projects this week. We will also be painting life-sized pictures of each type of penguin that we are studying.

We visited a couple of penguin web-sites last week that you might be interested in looking at with your child at home. One is “Penguins around the world”. This one has information, matching games and quizzes. The other is a web-cam in a penguin cage at the Monterey Zoo called “SplashZone Exhibit”.

NEEDED: ROBOT PARTS
After spring break our science unit will be about “Objects and Materials”. I would like to have the children build their own robots out of old appliances. (We take them apart first and look at the different types of materials that they are made from.) So, if you are cleaning up around your house over the next couple of months, please keep the old appliances for us. (Examples – hair blowers, mixers, telephones, radios, cassette players…) Please don’t send old TV’s, computers or microwaves because they have dangerous materials inside. Thanks for your help!

LITTLE MUNSCH ON THE PRAIRIE
A drama group from PTE (Prairie Theatre Exchange) will be performing at our school this Thursday, January 22. The performance is entitled “Little Munsch on the Prairie”, which retells a number of favourite stories by Robert Munsch. The fun begins at 9:30 in the gymnasium.

PENGUIN PARFAIT and other PENGUIN NEWS
On Friday we made our own “Penguin Parfait”. We created the perfect penguin habitat – layers of blue ocean water (a.k.a. blue Jell-O), white snow and ice (Cool Whip), and pebbles and rocks for building nests (crunched up
Oreo cookies). Believe it or not, it was delicious!

We began our penguin research this week. Each child will be studying a particular penguin. (Did you know that there are 17 different types of penguins?) We used the inter-net in the computer lab to look for information about each penguin and began to answer our 5 research questions.

We have been reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins in class. The book was written by Richard and Florence Atwater and is about a family who receive
a penguin named Captain Cook for a pet.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR
We have started a children’s choir group at school for grades 1 to 8. We will be meeting on Thursday at the noon recess (12:20 to 12:50) in the music room. This is a volunteer choir for students who are interested. Mrs. Butterfield and I will be leading the choir. If you have any questions, please speak to Mrs. Butterfield or myself.

GRADE ONE HOMEWORK

We have completed our study about the Northwest Coast Aboriginal People. Next up we will be studying PENGUINS (Characteristics and Needs of Living Things) for science.

CHRISTMAS SHOEBOXES
Our Christmas shoeboxes were picked up on Friday by the Fire/Paramedics. There was lots of excitement at morning recess as the ambulances pulled up to our school with their sirens blaring! Thanks to all of the children and parents who helped us out with this Christmas mission project.

HOMEWORK REMINDER
There is NO SCHOOL for the children on Friday – (the teachers still have to go!) So homework will be due on Thursday as well as the spelling test.

MTYP FIELD TRIP
We will be going to another play at the MTYP on Tuesday, DECEMBER 9. The permission slip is coming home today. Please return it to school as soon as possible. If you are able to drive and chaperone for us please fill out that portion of the form and make sure the office has the necessary information from you (driver’s license and insurance info) before we leave. THANKS!

WINTER WEATHER
Winter is here! Please send LOTS of winter clothing for your child. Hats, boots, mittens, neck warmer, (scarves are OK if they wear them inside of their coats.) Even if it is warmish in the morning, the weather can turn cold suddenly and we almost always go outside for recess. Ski pants are very important, not only for warmth but also to keep the children dry when playing in the snow. An extra pair of socks is also a great idea. It also helps if they can dress themselves – slip-on boots, mittens that they can put on etc …

REPORT CARDS
The report cards were sent home last Friday. Hopefully you found them in your child’s Froggy Bag. We would like the envelope sent back to school, but you may KEEP the report card it self. We would like to re-use the envelope for the next term’s report card.

BOOK WEEK
This week is Canadian Children’s Book Week (Nov. 15 – 20). The grade one and two class received a free book for every child called “Too Many Books!”
by Gilles Tibo. This book is theirs to keep. This program is sponsored by the TD Bank Financial Group.

NORTHWEST COAST ABORIGINALS
We have started our next social studies unit about one aboriginal group in Canada. I have chosen the First Nations people that live on Canada’s west coast. If you have any books or artifacts about these people and are willing to share them with us, please send them to school. Thanks!

COMPUTERS
Our class has been working on making our own ABC books in computer class. The children are using a program called “KID PIX”.

REPORT CARDS
Report Cards for first term will be coming home this Friday, Nov. 14. A sign-up sheet for Parent/Teacher conferences will be posted in the front hall. Please sign-up for a time slot that suits your schedule. If you are unable to make it during one of the scheduled time slots, please let me know and we can arrange an alternate time. I encourage the children to attend the conferences but if the parents would rather meet with me alone, that is fine too.

SPECIAL VISITOR
We are having a special visitor (and a four legged friend) on Wednesday, November 12 from the CNIB at 11:00. She will be speaking to us about being blind and how her seeing eye dog has a very special job.

GRADE TWO SPELLING
I am sending home the grade two’s spelling test booklets today. Please have a look through your child’s booklet, sign the last page and return it to school tomorrow (Tuesday) so that it is available to use again on Friday.

FALL SUPPER
We would all like to thank the many, many parents who helped out with the school’s annual Fall Supper that was held this past Saturday. It was fun and delicious, and hopefully we raised a lot of money for our new playground equipment. Thanks again!

CHRISTMAS SHOEBOXES
We would like to participate in the Christmas shoebox mission project again this year. Our class has two boxes to fill – one for a girl and one for a boy (ages 6 – 8). We drew slips of paper this morning to choose which item each child would bring for the shoeboxes. Remember the items must be small enough to fit inside of a shoebox. We would like these items in before Wednesday, November 19. The fire/paramedics will be picking up the boxes again this year. (Last year they came to the school with their sirens on and lights flashing!) I have copied part of the pamphlet – make sure you read the instructions carefully because some items cannot be included in the shoebox gifts. We would also ask each family to send $1
(a loonie) to help cover the cost of shipping. If you are unable to participate with this mission project, please let me know and I will make sure your child has their item to put in the shoebox.

PUMPKIN PARTY
Our class party will be on Friday, October 31 in the afternoon.
I would like the children to bring their costume (if they wish to wear one) to school in a plastic bag in the morning and leave them in their lockers. We will be changing into our costumes after lunch recess (around 12:50). We ask that the costumes are not gory or violent (no weapons) and respect our Christian atmosphere. After everyone has changed, we will be having a PARADE around the school so that everyone can take a look at all the costumes. After the parade we will be having a “SOCK HOP DANCE” in the gym. Next is recess, and following that will be the parties (food part) in our individual classrooms. (Then we get to send them home to you!)

PARTY SNACK PARENTS
I am dividing up the class into 4 parent groups and assigning each group to one of our yearly class parties. This way you only have to worry about providing snacks once a year. Don’t worry, I will send you a reminder for the other parties. If you are unable to help us out on that day, perhaps you can trade with another parent, or let me know. Don’t forget that we can’t have nuts or peanut butter at school. We have 20 children in the class.

CHANGE FOR HAITI
The Borsboom family (Jett is in our class) is spearheading a mission project, which started last week. They are collecting change ($) to send to a Lutheran church in Haiti, which was devastated by a hurricane. Many of you responded last week and our collection jar was over-flowing! They will also be collecting money this week, so if your family still wants to help, please send your change to school – every penny helps!

FALL SUPPER
Our school’s Fall Supper is coming up on Saturday, November 1. Each family should have received a package regarding this event. Please return your ticket orders and cheques ASAP. PARTNERS IN READING
Boston Pizza is offering a reading encouragement program which our
school would like to participate in this year. Each student needs to read at home twenty times over a one-month period. I will be using their regular reading logs to keep track of their 20 nights (this is their regular monthly goal anyway). You do not have to fill in a separate reading log. At the end of the month, the students will be recognized and presented with a certificate for a free Boston Pizza Kids Meal. If our school participates in this program over a 6-month period, Boston Pizza will also donate $500 to our school library. Let me know if you have any questions.

VIOLIN PRACTICE LOGS
I spoke to Mr. B. last week regarding the violin practice logs that are sent home at the beginning of each month. If you have not received one, let me know and I will send another one home. Mr. B. would like the practice logs to be kept inside the violin case so that he can check it once a week and then it should be handed in at the end of each month.

SCIENCE
We have finished up our first social studies unit about “Our Community”.
Our BOX TOWN project was very exciting and well done. Next up, we will be starting our first science unit about “Our Senses”.

MTYP FIELD TRIP
Our first field trip to the MTYP (Manitoba Theatre for Young People) will be this Thursday, October 2 in the afternoon. A permission slip is coming home today. Please fill it out and return it to school ASAP. We will need parent driver and chaperone help if you are available.

Thank you for all of the boxes, we have lots for now. We will be using them to build our own mini-community this week.

LITTLE BOOKS
The grade ones have been putting together their own copy of some little reading books. They are for them to keep and practice at home. They do not have to finish colouring (unless they want to) or return them to school.

VIOLIN PRACTICE

PICTURE RE-TAKES

The children will be bringing home a traced hand sheet to use this week. This week we are encouraging the children to think about and show kindness to others. If your child helps you at home (a chore) or is especially kind to someone we would like them/you to tape a coin (any amount) onto one of the fingers of their traced hand. Write down what the kind or helpful act was on the finger. There is also a place at the bottom of the sheet to donate a ($1) loonie if you wear a hat on Thursday - if you wish. Please return this sheet to school on Friday or the following Monday. All of the money donated will be sent to the Terry Fox Foundation.

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
This is the newsletter that will be sent home once a week, usually on Mondays. Included in the newsletter will be some of the activities that we have been working on during that week, upcoming events, reminders, announcements, etc … I will be sending home a paper copy of the newsletter attached to your homework sheets as well as sending you a copy by e-mail. If you do not receive your e-mail copy, please let me know.

GRADE TWO HOMEWORK
Attached to the newsletter will be the homework sheets for that week. They are usually sent home on Monday and need to be returned on Friday. You and you child can work out when the homework will be completed. Some children like to do a little every night, some like to finish early or if you have a busy evening, you can skip a night. The children have four (this week only three) nights to complete their homework. This week I am sending home spelling only. Other sheets will be added next week. There will be a spelling test on Friday – 10 words and 2 sentences.

GRADE ONE HOMEWORK
Grade Ones will be bringing home a Math Bag Game for homework. This bag will be sent home on Monday and needs to be returned on Friday. Each game has a recording sheet that should be filled out. This game is for your child to play WITH YOU. They may need some help with the recording sheet at first. Try to play this game a few times during the week. There is also a related math book included in the bag for you to read TO your child. Each bag also has a list on the front describing the items that belong in each game. Have Fun!

TAKE A LOOK FOR BOOKS
Please take a look around your house for any library books or classroom books that may still be in your house. Please send a note if this is what happened with your child’s library book. My classroom books have stickers on them with my name on the front cover.

CAR RALLY
Last week we had our Cereal Box Car Rally down the hallway ramp. All of the cars made it down the ramp – HOORAY!

STONE SOUP
We also made our “Stone Vegetable Soup” last week. Some of the children liked it and some were not so sure, especially the zucchini and the yams.

What’s New in One and Two - Supplement

June 5, 2008

Hi Grade One and Two Parents,

I have a couple of extra notices that were not included in the newsletter:

1) HAPPY BIRTHDAY! NEVE and TYLO June 6th

2) I am sending home the June Scholastic orders today. I know that some of the May orders have not arrived yet but I wanted to make sure that there is enough time for the June orders to be delivered before the end of school. Please return the orders along with your cheques by Wednesday, June 11.

3) You should have received a note and permission slip for our FIELD TRIP to the IMAX theatre on Thursday, June 12 (yellow paper). Please return it to school as soon as possible.

4) We have almost finished our last science unit on Position and Motion. For our final project we will be building cereal box cars and testing to see how far they can roll down the hallway ramp (inclined plane). We will be building our cereal box cars (wheels and axel) next week so each child needs one cereal box (or a light cardboard box from granola bars, popcorn, lunch snacks etc …). Please send the box early next week (send two if you have extra!)

5) We are also finishing up our healthy eating project for the year “Eating Through the Alphabet with Fruits and Vegetables”. We have reached “Z” is for zucchini. I would like to make vegetable soup with the children next week. I would like each child to bring one vegetable to school (suitable for soup). I’ll be bringing the zucchini. Other possible ideas are: potatoes, yams, celery, carrots, peas, beans, onion, etc … Please bring in the vegetables (NOT cut up) early next week as well.

HOMEWORK
I do not send homework packages home for June. I know that everyone is busy with afterschool events and the children are excited about summer. I do ask that they continue their home reading throughout June and through the summer months. I’ll continue sending home a newsletter once in a while but you do not need to initial them or return them to school.
GOODBYE BUTTERFLIES
All of our chrysalises hatched this week and we excitedly watched as each one carefully opened and a butterfly crawled out and dried its wings. On Friday we released our fluttering friends out on the playground. The students have had so much fun watching this metamorphosis. They would run into the classroom each morning and head straight for the butterflies. One of the butterflies came out with a crippled wing and they were very concerned about his welfare. We placed him carefully on a tulip flower. We spent some time talking about butterflies and people and asking God to watch over and take care of the special ones.
CHARLOTTE’S WEB
I have started reading one of my favourite books to the class – “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White. For those of you who have not read the book or watched the movie, it is about a girl named Fern, a pig named Wilbur and a very special spider named Charlotte.

EVENING OF THE ARTS
This Wednesday evening, May 28, Beautiful Savior Lutheran School students will present an “EVENING OF THE ARTS”. The evening begins at 6:30 pm and will be held outside in the playground. We will be sitting outside (weather permitting) so bring a lawn chair and blankets. If it does rain we will move inside. A number of different groups will be performing (violin, band, guitar etc…). There will be snacks after the performances. Hope to see all of you there!

GRANDPARENT’S DAY
I hope that all of you received my e-mail regarding my mistake in the date for Grandparent’s Day. The invitations that we made in class (bright yellow paper) were sent home last week with the incorrect date. The correct date is – Wednesday, June 4
This day begins at 9:00 where the grandparents will join us for chapel. Next is a visit to each classroom and we will end the morning around 10:00 with a snack. The visitors should be able to leave around 10:15 when the children go outside for recess. If your child does not have a grandparent who is able to attend, any relative or family friend is welcome. Sorry for the date mix up.

BIRD CHALLENGE
On Friday I sent home a yellow letter explaining the “Bird Challenge” that our class is participating in. Each year different groups around the country count the different types and number of birds that they see during one weekend. All of the data is sent into a central office and compiled. Later on they will send each group the results and a certificate of participation. We went out for a walk around the schoolyard on Friday and counted birds that we kept track of on our tally pocket list. The children were to continue tracking the birds that they saw during the following weekend and return their list on Monday. Even if your child was unable to add to their tally, they should return their pocket list so we can use Friday’s data.

CATERPILLAR GUESTS
Our surprise guests arrived last week. We have about 15 Painted Lady butterflies in our classroom. They are growing bigger each day and eating LOTS! Today (Tuesday) we were in for a big surprise – each caterpillar has started to turn into chrysalis. The last time that they shed their skin, a different skin is underneath – a chrysalis skin. In about a week we will have another surprise – the chrysalis will split open and a butterfly will emerge. What an amazing transformation to watch! We have been keeping a butterfly journal to record their changes. We will also be making our own Butterfly ABC book.

BUTTERFLY PROJECTS
Last week each child designed their own butterfly (we learned about symmetry too). Today, during computer class we wrote clues to describe our butterflies. Can you figure out who made which butterfly by reading the clues? They will be posted on the hall bulletin board.

SCIENCE
This week we will be working with inclined planes and friction.

RESEARCH BOOK
We have been working on our animal research book. Each book needed to include – What they eat? Where they live? What they look like? Family and Baby Info? Interesting Facts, What type of animal are they? and How they move? This week we are working on the illustrations. They will be reading their research book to their guests on Grandparents Day on Wednesday, June 4.

Just to remind all of our families about the Evening of the Arts which is coming up in a few short weeks. It will be held on Tuesday, May 28 at

GRADE TWO MATH
Last week we worked on double-digit subtraction with re-grouping (borrowing). Most of the children seemed to understand, although keeping the digits lined up was a challenge. We started out by working with blocks. We traded 10-unit blocks for single ones. We also learned a couple of different ways to subtract. The grade ones were very impressed with how smart the grade twos were!

SCIENCE
We have been working on our new science unit called Position and Motion. This week we will be working with moveable toys and inclined planes as well as learning about friction and force.
(Our surprise classroom visitors will soon be here too!)

WRITER’S WORKSHOP
The children will be starting a new writing project this week. They will each be writing an information book about an animal of their choice. We will be writing the rough draft in class and then publishing the final copy on the computers.

SPRING TEA and CRAFT SALE
Thank you very much to all of the parents and family members who helped out with our annual Spring Tea and Craft Sale which was held this past Saturday. The students did a wonderful job serving and manning some of the craft tables. Thanks to all of you who came out for lunch in support of this fund-raiser. It was lots of fun and very successful!

Once again there is NO SCHOOL this Friday, May 9. That means the homework packages are due and the spelling test will be on Thursday, May 8th instead.

ICECREAM
We finally had a nice enough day last week to go outside and make ice cream. We made the ice cream in Ziplock bags and used kid power to mix and shake. Some of the children were wondering if they could make more ice cream at home – the recipe and instructions are in their MATTER booklet that came home last week among a bagful of completed schoolwork. It is on the last page of the booklet.

GRANDPARENT’S DAY
We will be having a “Grandparent’s Day” again this year. The date we have tentatively chosen is on the first Wednesday in June. They will be invited to attend chapel, visit the classrooms, spend some time with their grandchildren and then enjoys some refreshments. More information regarding this event will come later. If your child does not have a grandparent who is available to join us, a relative or close friend would also be welcome to attend.

VICTORIAN SPRING TEA
Don’t forget that the annual School Spring Tea and Craft Sale will take place this weekend on Saturday from 10:30 to 2:30. The children have been working on “Victorian” art projects to decorate the tearoom (a.k.a. the gym). Come and join us for lunch and look through the 30 different craft tables! Your tea ticket money should have been returned last Friday.

SCIENCE
We postponed our ice cream making project until the weather is a little warmer (we make it outside) but we did build our Gingerbread Boy boats. Their assignment was to build a boat for the gingerbread boy (who weighs 10 pennies) so he can cross the river and not be eaten by the fox. Next up is our unit on POSITION and MOTION.

COMPUTERS
This week we wrote our own SPRING poems on the computers. We have been learning how to use the WORD program, the KID PIX program and various games and sites from the inter-net.

STORY TIME
I am reading a new novel to the class called Bug Boy. It is by Carol Sonenklar. It is about a boy named Charlie who loves bugs and a surprise gift that he receives called the “Bug-a-view”.

CHAPEL
This week during Wednesday’s chapel service the classes will be doing their presentations on this month’s Fruit of the Spirit – Gentleness. We are doing a VERY short skit about the Good Shepherd and a song called “I am Jesus Little Lamb”.

HOMEWORK
Don’t forget, because there is no school on Friday, the homework packages and the spelling tests will be on Thursday instead.

BOOK CHARACTER PUPPETS
We have completed our Book Talks and presented them to the class. The children each made a character puppet from the book that they read over Spring Break and had them (the puppets) tell the class about their story. The puppets and their “TALKS” are posted on our hallway bulletin board.

MATTER UNIT
Our science unit about matter is almost complete. Last week we worked on some “buoyancy” design projects. They had to make a ping-pong ball sink and a rock float using only plasticine. This week we will be designing a boat to hold the Gingerbread Man and making our own ice cream. We also learned about the warning labels on some household products – flammable, corrosive, explosive and poisonous.

MATH
The grade twos are continuing to work on double digit adding and the grade ones are working on subtraction and skip counting.

PUZZLES
The children have been doing 100 piece puzzles when they have completed their class work. I can’t believe how much faster they have gotten in just a few weeks. We have also learned a lot about getting along with others, teamwork, and not hiding the last puzzle piece!

WELCOME BACK!
I hope all of you had a fun and relaxing Spring Break. It’s hard to believe that we are back at school for our last 3-month term. Hopefully spring is just around the corner. Don’t forget to send outdoor clothing for the weather (rubber boots, splash pants, extra socks and yes, they still need a jacket). THANKS

THAILAND WEEK
Our Thailand week was a big hit! Thank you especially to the parents and families who loaned us artifacts to share with the children and cooked the delicious food for our “Taste of Thailand” day. All of us appreciate your time and help.

SCIENCE
We will be finishing up our science unit on MATTER over the next few weeks. Next up, we are expecting some classroom guests to crawl by for a visit next month. I hope they don’t FLY away too soon.

BOOK TALK
The children should have all read a longer book over the spring break week. This week we will be starting our BOOK TALKS (kind of like a book report/project). We will be learning about character, setting, and plot/problem.

GRADE TWO MATH
Before Spring Break the grade twos worked on simple double digit adding. This month we will be tackling double digit adding with regrouping (OR when we went to school it was called carrying). Some children understand this concept easily and some have more difficulty and it will take more time and practice.
